Insomnia Cures Should Match the Cause

Are you trapped in a cycle of insomnia? Unfortunately, that's exactly where many people find themselves. We--humans, that is--need sleep. It's how our bodies miraculously repair those little bits of physical damage we suffer during the day. But if something prevents you from sleeping well, your body doesn't get a chance to restore itself.

Insomnia--an inability to sleep--can keep you from performing well the next day. This may lead to stress that keeps you awake the next night. If this cycle is allowed to continue, it could literally kill you. And this is why insomnia cures are so important. Your very survival depends on them.

Curing insomnia is possible only after we understand the cause. Your inability to sleep is not really a disease; it's a symptom of other problems. Although insomnia has many causes, the first place you should look is inside your own head. Stress, anxiety and depression are by far the most common causes of sleeplessness. They make it almost impossible for your brain to "shut up" at night and let you sleep.

And guess what? The insomnia these mental conditions cause will usually make them worse. Anxiety causes insomnia, insomnia causes anxiety, anxiety causes insomnia...well, you get the idea.

You could always take sleeping pills. But pills are not the best solution. Prescription sleep aids don't treat the cause of your insomnia. In fact, they don't really treat anything. Think about it. If you have an infection, you take antibiotics. After ten days of antibiotics, the infection is gone and you stop taking the pills. Problem solved.

Unfortunately, sleeping pills don't work that way. If you take sleeping pills for ten days, you will probably get ten nights of drug-induced sleep. But when you stop taking the sleeping pills, there is an excellent chance you won't be able to sleep at all. In fact, you will probably be climbing the walls trying to figure out how to score another pill.

Mental issues like stress, anxiety and depression should be treated with appropriate methods. There are some incredibly effective stress and anxiety reduction techniques that can be easily learned and practiced. Depression may be more difficult to tackle, but it's a pretty sure bet that sleeping pills aren't the best remedy.

Here's the point: find out what's causing your insomnia before you start throwing pills at it. The most effective insomnia cures are closely matched to the cause. Most insomnia can be cured with mental exercises and lifestyle changes. There are also excellent herbal remedies that are much safer than prescription sleep aids. Remember how great it used to feel when you got a good night's sleep? It's possible to feel that way again.
